It comments: The book is based on the mathematic modellizzazione of the ballistic phenomena. The author in brilliant way manages to frame in equations closed several problems of estimate and evaluation of the phenomena of internal, external and final ballistics. This last one considering the impact with targets from several material (no biological). In order that the author follows in the resolution of several equations it is a desirable property of the rudiments of differential and integral calculus. There interesting also the considerations to edge of the final equations. To our medesto to seem the treatment remains often at too theoretical level, some practical examples of real application of the obtained mathematic relations, they would have been used for understanding certainly better the matter. In the section dedicated to the internal ballistics the study is faced of several parametres in the domination of the space (long the cane) omitting unfortunately the study in the domination of the time (typical of the test in manometrica). Considering the text in his entirety and also the narrow number of specific publications in Italian language, we believe that it is worth the punishment to purchase it.Commenti: Il libro è incentrato sulla modellizzazione matematica dei fenomeni balistici. L’autore in modo brillante riesce ad inquadrare in equazioni chiuse i vari problemi di stima e valutazione dei fenomeni di balistica interna, esterna e terminale. Quest’ultima considerando l’impatto con bersagli di vario materiale (no biologico). Per seguire l’autore nella risoluzione delle varie equazioni è auspicabile avere dei rudimenti di calcolo differenziale ed integrale. Interessanti anche le considerazioni a margine delle equazioni finali. A nostro medesto parere la trattazione rimane spesso a livello troppo teorico, alcuni esempi pratici di applicazione reale delle relazioni matematiche ottenute, sarebbero certamente serviti a comprendere meglio la materia. Nella sezione dedicata alla balistica interna si affronta lo studio dei vari parametri nel dominio dello spazio (lungo la canna) tralasciando purtroppo lo studio nel dominio del tempo (tipico del test in manometrica). Considerando il testo nella sua globalità ed anche il ristretto numero di pubblicazioni specifiche in lingua italiana, crediamo valga la pena acquistarlo.

It comments: The text contains numerous information useful and interesting, only fault the section dedicated to the experimental and applied ballistics that suffers from the antiquity of the text. The second edition of the book goes up again already in 1955, and in further 50 years the technique with the Advent of the electronics (the first transitor go up again in 1950) has done remarkable progress, so significant progress to twist and to renew the methods of inquiry described by the author. There remains, in any case, interesting the historical aspect referable to a kind of scientific archaeology that extols the human inventiveness as means for the overcoming of the technological limits. It would be very interesting to be able to read a text that, with the same statement and logical run, illustrates the modern techniques of experimentation and ballistic inquiry.Commenti: Il testo contiene numerose informazioni utili ed interessanti, unica pecca la sezione dedicata alla balistica sperimentale ed applicata che soffre dell’antichità del testo. Già la seconda edizione del libro risale al 1955, ed in oltre 50 anni la tecnica con l’avvento dell’elettronica (i primi transitor risalgono al 1950) ha fatto notevoli progressi, progressi così significativi da stravolgere e rinnovare i metodi di indagine descritti dall’autore. Rimane comunque interessante l’aspetto storico riconducibile ad una sorta di archeologia scientifica che esalta l’inventiva umana come mezzo per il superamento dei limiti tecnologici. Sarebbe molto interessante poter leggere un testo che, con medesima impostazione e percorso logico, illustri le moderne tecniche di sperimentazione ed indagine balistica.

It comments: As emphasised on the cover fourth one, the author synthesises at most the fundamental concepts that regulate the internal, external and final ballistics. The use of the mathematic relations is indispensable at least. We notice, in any case, that the true text and really it already ends (perhaps not much prematurely) to page 85, further in fact, there are only the numerous ballistic boards and other table data.Commenti: Come enfatizzato sulla quarta di copertina, l’autore sintetizza al massimo i concetti fondamentali che regolano la balistica interna, esterna e terminale. L’uso delle relazioni matematiche è ridotto al minimo indispensabile. Notiamo comunque che il testo vero e proprio termina (forse un pò prematuramente) già a pagina 85, oltre infatti, si trovano solo le numerose tavole balistiche ed altri dati tabellari.

Putroppo the author in his treatment does not consider the spheric dusts (ball powders).Commenti: Testo semplice e gradevole, tra le varie sostanze esplosive esaminate, l'autore fornisce una descrizione schematica ma dettagliata, dei diversi procedimenti per l'ottenimento delle nitrocellulose e delle polveri infumi. Tali informazioni non sono purtroppo di facile reperimento, ragion per cui, anche solo per questo aspetto, pensiamo ne valga l’acquisto. Putroppo l'autore nella sua trattazione non considera le polveri sferiche (ball powders).

The didactic vocation of the book is obvious and I wait for this that the reader facilitates undoubtedly. Interesting, not easy to find on other texts, the treatment relative to the intermediate ballistics. At the end of each section an autoverification questionnaire is also present on the comprehension level of all that read.Commenti: Il testo, purtroppo in lingua inglese, è molto ben fatto e concede l’opportunità di comprendere, almeno qualitativamente, i fenomeni balistici. La vocazione didattica del libro è evidente e questo aspetto facilita indubbiamente il lettore. Interessante, non facile da trovare su altri testi, la trattazione relativa alla balistica intermedia. Al termine di ogni sezione è anche presente un questionario di autoverifica sul livello di comprensione di quanto letto.

The best aspect of the text is being able to pass from the theoretical approach to that practical / experimental, finally not words but objective data. Unfortunately, a great deal of the suggested modifications ask for specific workings to the lathe on the mechanics of the rifle, this does not take out that the scientific / experimental, difficult approach to be found in other texts or on reviews, has us in different features enraptured. Sin that the linguistic limit does not let us savour more deeply the text.Commenti: Certamente uno dei libri migliori mai letti: assolutamente consigliato. L’autore esamina una ad una tutte le variabili che intervengono sulla precisione delle carabine, con esperimenti specifici e simulazioni al computer, viene dato un quadro completo di tutto ciò che può determinare l’allargamento della rosata. L’aspetto migliore del testo è il saper passare dall’approccio teorico a quello pratico/sperimentale, finalmente non parole ma dati oggettivi. Purtroppo, molte delle modifiche suggerite richiedono specifiche lavorazioni al tornio sulla meccanica della carabina, ciò non toglie che l’approccio scientifico/sperimentale, difficile da trovare in altri testi o su riviste, ci ha in diversi tratti entusiasmato. Peccato che il limite linguistico non ci permetta di assaporare più profondamente il testo.

Ci siamo cencentrati sulla parte utile per conoscere un po’ più approfonditamente i processi produttivi delle nitrocellulose e delle polveri infumi, comprese le ball powders. La lettura è facile e scorrevole, l’autore ha infatti evitato di spingersi troppo spesso nella descrizione particolareggiata delle reazioni chimiche, mantenendo comunque un ottimo livello di dettaglio.

Nonostante la prima edizione del testo risalga al 1947, ci è sembrata una lettura da non perdere.

This book is not any more in print even if, luckily, it turns out to be still easily traceable in net.Commenti: Libro datato (la prima stesura risale al 1933) ma comunque interessante e valido. L’edizione da noi letta, la quarta del 1987, gode inoltre degli aggiornamenti apportati dall’autorevole Antonio Granelli. Il titolo dell’opera potrebbe trarre in inganno, non si parla solo di tecnica venatoria, tra gli argomenti trattati troverete: Il trinomio cacciatore, fucile, cartucce; Il fucile; Il bossolo; La polvere; Il borraggio; Il piombo; Pressioni nel fucile; La velocità dei pallini; Dispersione, penetrazione, portata, micidialità e rinculo; Tecniche produttive delle polveri; Caricamento delle cartucce; La portata e il rendimento dei fucili e delle cartucce; Balistica dei piccoli calibri; La variabilità delle cartucce, ed altro. Tuttavia, l’autore era un tiratore e quindi buona parte del libro risulta accessibile anche ai non professionisti, molti dei risultati sono abbastanza semplici da poter essere determinati anche con una calcolatrice scientifica.

Questi soggetti sono quindi ampliati per includere un capitolo completo sulle forze aerodinamiche non lineari. Il capitolo finale del libro presenta una panoramica dei metodi sperimentali per misurare la dinamica di volo dei proiettili.

Infine, il testo offre un insieme incomparabilmente completo di foto relative alle perturbazioni aerodinamiche di proiettili in volo (subsonici, transonici e supersonici). Il volume è un complemento necessario a qualsiasi corso di laurea relativo alla dinamica di volo dei proiettili.

I testi troppo tecnici forniscono spesso numerose equazioni relative alla modellizzazione matematica del fenomeno ma, purtroppo, pochi tiratori riescono a trarne informazioni utili tali da essere impiegate direttamente nel miglioramento pratico. “Modern Exterior Ballistics” appartiene certamente a questa categoria di testi. Per seguire l’autore nella risoluzione delle varie equazioni è necessario avere dei rudimenti di calcolo differenziale ed integrale. A nostro medesto parere la trattazione rimane spesso a livello troppo teorico anche se il testo risulta comunque interessante e forse tra i pochi con un esame così dettagliato del comportamento dei proiettili in volo.

L’autore fornisce gli strumenti per poter comprendere tutti i risvolti pratici del coefficiente balistico e del coefficiente di forma, dando specifiche indicazioni sui metodi per scegliere il miglior proiettile per la propria applicazione specifica (per le peculiari prestazioni di balistica esterna, non terminale). Circa 1/3 del testo è dedicato ad utili tavole riassuntive su cui l’autore espone le rilevazioni sperimentali del coefficiente balistico su oltre 175 proiettili di vari produttori (vedi indice). L’aspetto migliore del libro come per un testo già recensito: “Rifle Accuracy Facts” di Harold R. Vaughn, è il saper coniugare l’approccio teorico a quello pratico/sperimentale.

Also in this case we regret that the linguistic limit does not let us savour more deeply the text.Il libro rappresenta certamente un “must” per gli interessati alla balistica esterna e per i tiratori a media e lunga distanza con carabina, l’esposizione delle informazioni è chiara e dettagliata con una profondità “pratica” difficile da trovare in altri testi o su riviste. Anche in questo caso ci rammarichiamo che il limite linguistico non ci permetta di assaporare più profondamente il testo.

Esposizione chiara ed efficace, certamente un buon punto di partenza per il neofita.

Questo modello di penetrazione rappresenta un avanzamento tecnico rispetto alle cognizioni di balistica terminale precedenti ed è direttamente correlato alla comprensione degli effetti dei parametri caratterizzanti il proiettile (velocità, diametro, peso, forma) nella generazione di una ferita inabilitante. Quello dell’incapacità fisica provocata dalle ferite d’arma da fuoco è un argomento complesso, discusso e controverso per molti decenni, questo libro tratta tutti gli aspetti di questa materia e comprende una ricapitolazione dei principali studi precedenti e degli sforzi di modellizzazione connessi alle questioni mediche. Secondo il nostro modesto parere, l’esposizione dei vari punti trattati poteva essere meglio razionalizzata e schematizzata a vantaggio della comprensibilità generale del testo. Rimane comunque evidente il rilevante lavoro svolto da MacPherson sia dal punto di vista dell’impostazione teorica preliminare che anche e soprattutto sotto il profilo sperimentale.
