Dusts infumi: improved images
August 7th, 2009 Posted in chemistry, macrophotography, propellant
We show in this article a selection, revised digitalmente, images picked up to the microscope electronic and already published on the preceding article: "Infumi: let's see dusts from close up“. The revision has allowed the reduction of some imperfections and the most natural statement of a colouring for several dust wheats.
Cheddite Granular S (gross)
first plan of the very indented and irregular granules
As already said about the preceding article, thanks to the extreme resolution allowed by the electronic microscope, between several details, you will be able to notice: different superficial irregularities, the almost "frothy" aspect of the wheats of Cheddite Granular S, the imperfections of cut on the Sipe and particularly for Vihtavuori N340 and 3N38, the flowing deformation on the extremities of the cylindrical wheats, we suppose caused during the production, at the process of cut mediated blade you rotate after extrusion.

Sipe
quadrangular lamellar wheats and imperfections due to the cut post-rolling

Vihtavuori N340
image of whole of the cylindrical wheats extrusions, in evidence the superficial porosity in confirmation of that one obtained internally

Vihtavuori N340
irregularity and superficial porosity

Vihtavuori N340
deformation of the extremities of the wheats that we hypothesise owed to the cut phase

Vihtavuori N340
primissimo plan of the deformation that we hypothesise owed to the phase of cut of the wheats after extrusion
We had always hypothesised besides what her 3N38 a dust of type extrusion was simply to cylindrical wheats but, thanks to the picked up images, we discover that instead of her it is of type perforated - cylindrical. There is in fact present on each wheat a passing court of the approximate diameter of 50µm (1µm it corresponds to a millimetre thousandth), not visible to naked eye.

Vihtavuori 3N38
detail that illustrates the unexpected drilling of the wheats and the superficial irregularities of the same ones
To be some of all that the images were suggesting us, we have contacted the well-known house producer of the dusts in object, Finnish Eurenco-Vihtavuori, close to the factory note of Vihtavuori, little close urban centre to which rises and from which it takes the name, put to about 300Km to North of the capital Helsinki. The responsible person of the department searches for and development of the company, the doctor Matti Hämäläinen, has kindly informed of us that as us observed is corrected and not caused by collateral effects to the extrusion process, but intentionally determined during the production of the dust. Not only, further 3N38 also the N340 is classified as "perforated" or rather also on the N340, to an attentive observation, the drilling of each wheat should be visible.

As confirmed at the Vihtavuori's, the court on the wheats, in spite of his reduced dimensions, determines a change of the gaseous emission to the combustion, regressive (for the simply cylindrical geometry) to more constant (for the cylindrical-perforated geometry). Besides, on such propellant, there is extolled also the porosity of the wheats then highlit by the images to the SEM. Precisely, during the mixture of the nitrocellulose gelatinizzata, specific substances are added in shape of soluble crystals in water, but not in the gelatinizzazione solvent, in the way of obtaining I fix an increase of the superficial and internal porosity, for each wheat.

Nitrokemia Rex32

After the extrusion, the cut and the dryer of the solvent, the wheats are subjected in fact to immersion in water, during such a phase the crystals of the additive one used for the increase of porosity release themselves and are removed for washing, leaving in the wheats the corresponding cavities. The obtained porosity can be regulated intervening be on the quantity of the added crystals on which on the dimensions of the same ones.

The images picked up let us glimpse the remarkable and enchanting complexity contained in the processes and in the productive techniques of the propellant.
