I proiettili in lega privi di gas check infatti, tendono a lasciare in canna depositi metallici tanto maggiori quanto più in alto si porta la spinta propulsiva e con essa: velocità, pressione e temperatura. Il gas check è una coppetta metallica ancorata mediante crimpatura alla base del proiettile stesso. Le coppette vengono realizzate spesso per imbutitura di fogli o strisce di rame dello spessore tipico di 0.75mm. E’ possibile l’applicazione dei gas check solo su palle predisposte con una specifica base sottocalibrata (vedi immagine a fianco).

Il gas check ha il duplice compito di proteggere la base del proiettile dalla vampa prodotta dalla combustione della polvere di lancio e contestualmente, durante l’avanzamento in canna del proiettile, va a comportarsi come un raschiatore per l’eliminazione dei residui di sparo dalla rigatura della canna. L’accumulo di tali residui, tipico dell’uso di pallottole più o meno tenere in lega di piombo, pregiudica progressivamente la precisione dell’arma, riducendo l’efficacia della rigatura della canna nell’imprimere al proiettile il moto rotatorio di stabilizzazione giroscopica. L’adozione del gas check riduce o evita il cosiddetto “impiombamento” della canna, dovuto alla fusione della base della palla o di parte di essa e tende ad eliminare per raschiatura anche eventuali residui dovuti alla frizione tra il proiettile e la rigatura.
